A long awaited close to reality demonstration of Muhammad!
This trilogy is long overdue. I think, Iran, with its immense motion picture abilities and very talented actors is a good choice for making this movie. And I am happy that they did it, although I'm now fearing that due to political differences with Iran, some countries may politicise this movie, and strip it from its factual and artistic aspects.
The 1977 Hollywood production of the birth of Islam, i.e. "The Message", with its central figure, i.e. Muhammad, was the only really valid presentation of Muhammad in motion pictures. Since then, there hasn't been any real effort to embark on a mission to try to depict prophet Muhammad's life in a motion picture. Although very controversial, this trilogy will address this matter. The first movie, released August/September 2015 will focus on prophet Muhammad's life, starting from the time before he was born till the age of 13. The second movie, no release date set yet, will deal with his life from the age of 14 to 40, i.e. the age he became a prophet. And the third movie will tell the story from his prophethood to his death. Arguably, the 1977 Hollywood version would correspond to the third part of this trilogy. The main difference being that all previous depictions of movies about the birth of Islam mainly focused on the religion in general, while this trilogy seems to mainly focus on Muhammad himself, his thoughts, desires, ambitions, struggles, personality etc.
I would have loved to see cinemas across the world trialling a one off release of this movie to try to see the response. I expect the tickets to sell out immediately, which would consequently allow those cinemas to justify longer screening periods of this movie. The Guardian newspaper's 4 out of 5 star review is a hint of the marvellous work Majid Majidi has done with the first part of this trilogy.
My wish is that the political pressure doesn't tangle this project and that the second and third parts of this trilogy is soon released in order to allow the sense of continuity to be maintained.
