Bayharborbutcher might be correct, an anthology series might be a possibility. I have my doubts though since it is based on a book. Big Little Lies would have been a two hour movie 5 years ago, the film industry did this do themselves by not making the 50 million dollar adult drama.
Great cast, but the fact that bona fide movie stars are turning to TV these days is not a good sign for the film industry.
The film industry did this to themselves by mostly relying on sequels, superhero flicks, idiotic comedies, and mindless action thrillers. The fact is now TV is better. They tell better and more complex stories, and on top of that they give actors roles that they can really sink their teeth into. This is especially true for women, especially older women. If you're not younger than 40 you're going to have a hard time getting roles. It's so strange to me that they cast these actresses in their 20's to play love interests of men in their 40's. I love Jennifer Lawrence, but she's constantly getting cast in roles that should go to an older actress. These days there's very few good movies that come out each year. The quality of TV can now rival that of film. A lot of shows (particularly on cable) have a cinematic feel to them. TV isn't slowing down in quality anytime soon.

There are the only reliable films at the box office these days with mid-sized budget or more. The audience did this, people do want watch dramas in their homes these days and they do not care about stars.

Maybe the audience does deserve a little bit of the blame but the film industry pretty much decided that they did not want to make the 50 million adult thriller/drama and spend 20 million marketing in order to maybe get 95 million at the US boxoffice because those films dont sell well overseas. The audience found what they were missing on cable TV or streaming (Netflix). The fact that the film industry did not want to make a movie based on Big Little Lies starring Witherspoon, Kidman and Woodley pretty much says all you need to know about the state of the film industry.
