I think Nicole Kidman is way too old to play Celeste. She's much older than Alexander Skarsgard, who plays Perry, and she's no longer "unacceptably beautiful" after messing up her face with too much botox and fillers. Charlize Theron would have been a much better fit.
As for Madeline, while Reese Witherspoon is great at playing that kind of character, the description of her in the book says she has dark hair. Reese dyed her hair brunette for Walk The Line, why couldn't she do it for Big Little Lies (or wear a wig)?
Shailene Woodley as Jane is spot-on.
Despite the small inconsistencies, I'm looking forward to the mini-series.

Madeline is definitely not ditzy like Elle Woods, so isn't really repitition. She can be quite bitchy too, but hilariously and quite melodramatically :D I'd say the only similarities between Elle and Madeline are that they are both played by Reese Witherspoon and they are little over the top and dramatic. I can see where the other poster is coming from by comparing the two characters, but they are just different enough to prevent complete repitition.

That's assuring. I love it when Reese hams it up like she does for her best performances in Freeway, Election, and Legally Blonde. She has such an expressive face that's made for OTT performances.

The casting of Celeste is ridiculous.
Kidman's age is more of what the mother of Jane should be.
And Kidman is not the 'stunning' beauty that is described in the book.
Ugh. Who did she pay off to get this role?
