"Middleton, USA"

"Middleton, USA". But anyone else think it's ironic that the show is actually filmed in Canada with a Canadian cast? It's so obvious. The street signs are obviously Canadian and the Canadian accents are impossible to miss.

And what's the point? The show would work equally well if it took place in Middleton, Canada. All too often television is filmed in Canada with a Canadian cast and we're supposed to believe it's the USA. It doesn't really do any favors to anyone.

The same thing happens in New Zealand a lot, which is even worse since New Zealand looks nothing like North America. But at least they get actual Americans for the cast.

I love The Good Witch movie and TV franchise. Don't get me wrong. It's just a pet peeve of mine.

I believe it's much cheaper for them to film there, so they probably are able to put more money in other parts of the show.

A lot of movies and TV shows have been filmed in Canada. I recently watched "Roxanne" with Steve Martin and Darryl Hannah (wonderful romantic comedy from 1987) and was enchanted by the small town. It was filmed also in Canada, in Nelson, British Columbia

The Good Witch was filmed in Canada with Canadian actors and accents right from the first movie. So my point is, why pretend that it's not Canada? This happens way too often and it's cheesy.

reply

Maybe because the bulk of the main characters are American and it would make it seem like a show where Americans try to fit in with the Canadians.

They should probably just instruct the minor characters to use an American accent.

reply

You'd think they'd try and coach the Canadian actors on speaking in American accents, but it doesn't seem like they bother. They probably think the differences are too small to make a fuss over.

reply

I don't think they have ever said they are in the USA on the show?? Yes Sam says he's from New York but I don't think they've every labelled "Middleton" as an American town!

(I saw so many GW actors in Degrassi last night haha)

They have U.S. money, U.S. Postal Service mail collection boxes, and their license plates have the motto "Falcon State". Cassie drives to Chicago in three hours. Middleton is in the U.S.

Lots of TV shows and movies are filmed in Canada because it's cheaper, but the story is American. More people are inclined to watch an "American" production no matter where it's filmed.

Like sure, there are many great NZ movies and TV shows, but honestly, how many people watch them vs American shows with American accents and such.

I am from NZ and I watch more American TV than I do NZ stuff. I just like it more.

reply

American television networks are definitely more inclined to put American productions on the air. But Canadian shows have always been the exception to that rule.

America has a history of being somewhat xenophobic but I say it's time to move away from that.
