How is George Cassie's father-in-law?

It has been a while since I watched the first movie, but isn't George the father of Jake's first wife? How can he be Cassie's father-in-law then?

reply

I always assumed he was Jake's dad. See here:

Even if he wasn't, he served as a sort of adopted father-in-law.

reply

He is Jake's father in law but since he was so close and lived with them and helped raise kids I guess they did kind of adopt him Looks like they dropped his wife Gwen from the series

lovedmlis right -- George was Jake's first wife's father. So, technically, he's not really Grace's grandpa either. I think it's nice though that they are all one big happy extended family.

I wonder if they'll deal with the disappearance of George's wife, since they handled the Jake thing head-on? Maybe they wanted to save it for a later episode. I hope they don't just ignore it. My guess is that she died and they don't want to tick off fans with TWO deaths covered in one episode, since they knew everyone would be mad about Jake's demise.

When was the last time we saw George's second wife? Was she at Brandon's wedding?

reply

No, she was visiting her kids in California and couldn't get back in time. She didn't have a huge part so they may just gloss over it like she didn't happen. Or Like someone else said they may not have wanted to throw too much at us at first. they never show Martha's husband anymore but that's not a big deal. But with George living under the same roof they need to explain it or just pretend like it never happened since this is a bit of a reboot. I wonder if Brandon's wife will reappear?

reply

Actually Martha's husband has been on a couple of times--one discussing their son with her and the other at their anniversary party.

I just binged watched the first season, and from one of the episodes it seems to me as if George was Jake's father, because he said that he never wanted Jake to be a policeman either but that he supported him. Only a father could say that. If he wasn't Jake's father, it would not have mattered if he supported his decision or not. I gathered that Jake was his son and therefore Cassie's father in law.

George isn't Jake's father. He's his father in law. Brandon and Lori's grandfather.

reply

Maybe it's just easier to call him that than to call him her dead husband's father-in-law and have to explain that he's her dead husband's dead wife's father. It does seem odd that he lives with her, though. What happened to Jake's house and George's wife?

reply

Cassie basically re-invented herself & found a whole new family, so it makes sense that he in effect serves as the adopted father-in-law or even adopted father (since Cassie's own is not in the picture).

It was referenced at the beginning of the series that they decided he should live with her, but didn't go into detail on why. I'd assume George's wife died or at best is in a nursing home. That would explain why he moved in; maybe it had something to do with Jake dying too -- they could help each other.

The show really has to have George pop up again at some point. It started off with him living at Grey House etc. & then he just disappears. At least reference where he is, even if you don't have the actor on!

Catching up on this via Netflix. I too was wondering what happened to George.... I'd like a reference also, or better yet...him back at least for a visit.

George is on from time to time when he has to bring a guest's luggage up to their room😀

I know everyone whose watched the movie loves him, but I find him to be a crotchety disagreeable man. Most of this impression was from the first episode where Sam was offering him a free medical exam and he was such a jerk.

I just watched the first episode, and George was definitely referred to as Cassie's father-in-law. However, in the original movie "The Good Witch" it is revealed that he is actually her late husband's father-in-law. I guess that makes him Cassie's father-in-law, in-law.
