Middleton size

In the movies, I always got the impression that Middleton was a small town with just a picturesque Main Street and was probably easily walkable, maybe 5-6k population. But it seems in the TV series it's more of a small city (40k-50k) with a more suburban feel than a small, charming town (going off the overhead shots they've been showing.) Maybe I misinterpreted the original movies, and it's always been that way, but to me it works better as a small town. Kinda like in Gilmore Girls or Hart of Dixie. It gives the town and the citizens, more character. The small police force (what happened to them, by the way,) small shops, parks, etc. the town itself has seen to have been lost as a character. Maybe it's just me....

No, I agree with you. There also seems to be a shift from season 1 to 2. Suddenly Sam isn't in the small, old medical office on the Main Street. Now there are multi-story office buildings that we've never seen before and he's moved there without any explanation.

I also never got the impression that the town had the resources for such an elaborate festival like the winter one in the finale. That would require some serious financial investment. I've lived in multiple small towns of both the assumed original size of Middleton and the more elaborate one, and I've never seen any of them pull of festivals to that level.

Not only did Dr. Radford's office change to a fancier building, but Stephanie's Bistro moved from a remodeled old house to a much larger old house or commercial building. The exterior of Cassie's Bell, Book, and Candle shop has looked different in each of the first three seasons (I haven't gone past Season 3 yet), while the interior seems about the same. From the aerial shots, it does appear that Middleton is a small city of at least 50,000 residents, yet the police force appears to consist of a chief and at most two or three cops (including Brandon).

Update: I just saw the "movie" from the end of Season 6, "Curse from a Rose", and the population of Middleton was stated to be a little over 3,000.
