I can't help but feel like he's an idiot

A vet with PTSD blah, blah, blah.
Whatever.

He is so fucking stupid to not accept the help when it is given, to settle in with a roof over the head with a more comfortable lifestyle and for leaving her.

I wouldn't call him an idiot, but he was weak, broken and irresponsible. It would be one thing to live in the woods and be homeless if he was by himself, so he could brood and wallow in his misery. But he had a daughter and his first responsibility should've been to her, over coddling his trauma and feeling sorry for himself.

And I agree - he should've taken the help they offered with gratitude and tried to cope with living in a proper home so she could flourish. Or at least set her up with someone / a family and go his own way. He only did the latter when the girl refused to go along with his plan. His fatherly love for her aside, he seemed to be using her as a distraction / crutch to keep his PTSD at bay. So I'm glad the girl got to escape living in his gloomy shadow.

Not a bad movie, but wouldn't watch again. The actress did a great job and I had no idea she was from NZ until I looked her up in IMDb. Like the acting and cinematography too. 7/10 for me.
