What was the point of gift-giving the night before decision day?

They didn't do that in other seasons.

Seemed like a last-minute buyout - buying your spouse gifts the night before they might dump you. What a waste of time and money.

Seems like with one couple out of the picture, they had to fill in with stupid stuff.

I remember Vanessa got a gift from Tres their last episode..it was something sweet. Perhaps the producers thought that it was a nice touch and thought to incorporate it into this season.
