Anyone else call this a black comedy? and not crap child actors for once

Personally found myself not in a state of suspense which a straight thriller usually entails, but quietly laughing to myself in only the way a black comedy does.. the demeanour of all 3 adults, especially Bacon, had almost a subtle slapstick way to it.
Don't no if this was the directors goal but can't be a coincidence since i got the same vibe from all three of them.
And then the more obvious, somewhat cheesy comedy between the two kids that fit well in-between the more serious blacker comedic scenes.

And for once a movie that cast two decent children actors, especially the short haired one.. If they ever hypothetically made a remake of stand by me (hope they never do.. but i can easily see it happening), i could picture him as one of the boys given a couple more years polishing up his skills.
But both were believable as somewhat backwards town kids, who have had crap parenting and still incredibly naive to almost everything outside of there own backyard.
Nice change from many films attempting to make kids try to appear much experienced and street smart. Tho thats becoming less common with the newer generation through phones/computers..
This film - I thought it was set in the late 90's early 2000's based on the cell phones used and the older model cars (only the guns looked close to present-day modern) so the kids attitudes fit well with the period still imo.

there were some strong black comedy mixed in, but to me the movie definitely stayed thriller. the good thing about black comedy is that it can do that. Have you seen Blue ruin?

reply

Blue Ruin is precisely the flick I thought of (admittedly, in part because my local arthouse cinema, where I have a membership, played them both, and only as a late show). This one isn't nearly as great, but it's still very good.

And I agree, suspense with a lot of black humor.

Prepare your minds for a new scale of physical, scientific values, gentlemen.

I agree. Definitely black comedy. Every time Kevin Bacon was on the phone with the dispatcher I was cracking up. The scene where the kids opened the trunk was hilarious. Shea Whingham's reaction to seeing two 10 year old kids open the trunk was hysterical. Even when he threatened their families, it was funny (though I have a pretty dark sense of humor).

As for the kids' acting. One word. Terrific. I don't want to take credit away from the kids, but that's a sign of a good director.

Yeah it gives me hope since he was handed a massive movie (the new spider man) that it might not be a cheesy PG crap fest like half of comic flicks that have been spewed out in recent memory.

It's VERY funny and very deliberate I think. It's really dark, but it gets so dark that it's actually funny. Although I like that it does know when to be dramatic and serious (the kid bleeding out at the end).

Definitely black comedy at times, suspense at times. The guy's speech to the kids about killing their pets and families was f'n hilarious!

This doesn't fit neatly into any one genre, and it shouldn't. There's a lot more going on thematically in this movie than any of the reviews I've read give it credit for.
