At some point on the way back from dumping the body or when he got back to where he left his car the sheriff should have heard the sirens set off by the boys. That sound would have travelled for miles in flat open country. I think just after he saw the beer bottle would have been a good moment and would have added to his incredulity.

shareCorrect me if I'm wrong but didn't they turn on the sirens after they had driven awaya little ways from the area it was parked? I don't remember them turning on the sirens when the car was still parked.
shareWhat're you talking about? He did hear the sirens. They show him going back to the far and after about a minute you can hear the sirens faintly in the background. He then runs toward it.
