I thought this movie was pretty good. Bacon was perfect for his part. The cinematography was good with nice wide views of the plains. But the story does have some flaws.

The kid looking down the barrel of a loaded gun.. thats pretty dumb.

Jumping out of the car scared when the engine starts up..silly

Why did the woman when she saw the copcar pass her with the kids in it, not right away call 911, but wait (however long) till she sat down for lunch and then tell the cops.

Later when she approached the car when the kids are in the back, to me it seemed as she was yelling at one of them like it was her kid.

It also seemed a bit silly she bought Bacons bs story and went looking for the keys.

The she gets shot in the head, which surprised me. But also that the guy must have been a pretty good shot.

Then the kid firing the gun in the car... thats pretty much immediate permanent hearing loss..

To me the weakest part of the movie was where Bacon first angles the doorlock knob with his shoelace and then the "rip out some wires from under the dashboard and start the car" with nobody in the crowded trailerpark noticing.

So all in all, the idea seemed good, the images were nice, the acting pretty decent, but the realism had a lot of holes.

She thought she was crazy, she seemed like an eccentric woman anyway. She even said when she saw the cop car and the kids again that she thought she imaginined it.

It was established as being a small town, an isolated trailer park and therefore nobody around to see the car jacking.

The kids were already established to be not very smart anyway. They're just children.

The man was a good shot, since it showed him shooting a small bottle infront of the car from far away.

kids are doing stupid things, heck you can find adults looking into barrel of gun, so not particularly stupid for kids under 10 who are not familiar with weapons (though in rural US one would expect they will be more experienced in this aspect)

as for woman, I think she could not believe she just saw kids driving the car, but later when she was in restaurant she could not resist destiny, when fish look at her and tell her to speak and also cops came, so she connected dots and reported it

as for Bacon's BS story I thought she will be suspicious especially since he was not wearing uniform, but after all it seem she was pretty dumb

I had also problem to understand stealing of the car with shoelace, maybe he didn't want to make noise by breaking glass and starting engine ain't that noisy? it's only reason I can think of why to waste so much time trying to get into car

I don't think it had lot of holes, just didn't seem so realistic but for sure possible, director thought explanation ain't necessary, at least it kept runtime short

The best - Fight Club, American Beauty & Falling Down.

you'd be surprised what people would do when ordered to by an authority figure. she walked upon a pretty unusual situation. she was probably still trying to process him crouching alongside the car; w/ the kids in the back.
