Why has Kim Basinger been "relegated" to playing villain roles lately?

I don't know if "relegated" is a good term of words, but the last two movies that she's been in The Nice Guys and Fifty Shades Darker had her play creepy, enigmatic, manipulative women of power. Granted it isn't like she hasn't played roles that have been in contrast to her sweet, fragile, dainty, doe-eyed, innocent characters (a la Vicki Vale, her Bond Girl character in Never Say Never Again, etc.) like in The Natural, Final Analysis, and Cool World. But it seems like she's one of those actress who doesn't exactly have the range, edge or charisma to successfully play a more sinister, morally shady role.
