I thought it was making fun of Super Mario Brothers. Back in the day you were either a Sega or Nintendo kid, no one had both. And because of this you either liked Sonic or Mario.

I had both, because I liked both. There wasn't a NEED to choose one over the other like the world is today.

Wasn't it just a world from Sonic games as well?
Sonic & Knuckles' first level starts on a Mushroom world.
