question about the big cameo

So this might be duhm, but to start by clarifying, I've only ever watched the movies, not gotten into the books or the animated series. So I was actually unaware that Maul had survived (which I think is silly but is what is). However, it seems that his survival was established in 2008, from what I read. So, to that, wouldn't that have been included in the material Disney told us to no longer regard as canon when they bought the rights? In which case, him still being alive would go against them telling us to no longer consider his survival canon? Sorry if that's hard to follow, I'm confused to, and if I'm taking things correctly, it makes it a bit difficult to know what's what.

I wonder when they decided to add this part. I’m reminded of Rogue One, where
Vader’s appearance, while completely frickin’ awesome, felt very much like a late afterthought.
I believe he was in the Clone Wars series. I know he was in Star Wars Rebels. Both of those were/are/always have been canon. That didn't change when Disney bought Lucasfilm. All of the novels written before Disney's purchase are considered legends. I don't think they were ever canon. The newer novels are canon.

I still think it's stupid that he survived, but, as you say, it is what it is.

The clone wars and rebels are canon. Its all the books that were tossed out. Or should I say, theyve been put to the side and are being mined for content in a rejiggered universe. ie the inclusion of thrawn into rebels.
