My theory is that Han purposefully made the exterior look aged and grubby, so that everyone who saw the ship would underestimate its speed.

Of course it wasn't a new ship when Lando had it, but Lando would do his best to make his ship look slick and cool. Appearances are important to a guy like Lando.

How you dare to suggest that a whitey soy-boy as Han Solo would keep the Falcon as clean as Lando, who belongs to the Chosen Race.

20 years of smuggling, without cleaning it once, would make anything very dirty.

All these responses are conveniently ignoring Lando's quote. No one would have thought the Falcon would be this immaculately clean 20 years ago, it's not logical or consistent with the lore of the Falcon - that it's a piece of junk with a heart of gold, and that it's likely always been that way. Having it be some sparkly new ship just a couple decades ago is ridiculous.

It's like when JJ Abrams made all the Republic planets/Maz's planet be within eyesight of each other, for convenience - compressing everything down to where there's no sense of scale. Except now, there's no real sense of history or time, it's being compressed again. Have to rip the soul out of everything, and hey, we need to have the idiot audience know that the timeframe is earlier. How do we do that? Oh, just make the Falcon look extremely clean - not just a little fresher... BRAND NEW looking. Who cares if it destroys the lore of the ship and makes no sense. Again, Lando knew this ship as a "hunk of junk" in his time as well, not some perfectly clean ship.
