I'm sure a lot of people thought it was insane to give a lead role to the guy that was not only the carpenter on the set of Star Wars, but was also surely going to be the end of the millennium falcon as Harrison was actively destroying it as a protest to not getting a chance at the part. It wasn't until Union carpenters pleaded with Lucas as they were unable to fix the damage ford had inflicted upon the set piece that Harrison got the chance...
