Uncomfortable with Being Uncomfortable!

The premise and trailer make me feel so uncomfortable. And then I feel ashamed that I'm uncomfortable! Lol!

I am impressed with Sally Field's bravery in taking on a subject that we as a society still find taboo. Older women + younger men is not something we explore much. Actually just sexuality of people 60+ is something we don't acknowledge outside of mocking it.

It's not just that she's a woman. I hate Woody Allen films and Charlie Sheen tv shows where the older male protagonist has 20-something women throwing themselves on him. But it's somehow even more awkward when it is a woman.

I hate that I feel that way! It's as if a woman loses her value once she loses her youthful beauty. How sad. Even a 10 year difference would feel weirder if the older party was a woman rather than a man.

But who knows. Maybe society is changing for the better. When I was young, gay people were not accepted at all. Our society has made huge progress (at least in the US) at accepting people regardless of sexual preference. We've still got a long way to go, but it's definitely a different world out there now.

Maybe as we continue to progress and our population ages (hello baby boomers!), we will be able to shed some of the prejudice we as a society hold against older people. It would be pretty cool to live in a world that embraces people who love one another regardless of race, age, or gender!

Yeah, I think you're absolutely right. It's just easier said then done! :-)

Without spoiling anything for you-- all I will say is, the movie allows us to draw our own conclusions about what happened. I felt that the movie wasn't really about a a younger man and an older woman. It was about a woman who gave up her dreams for duty. When that responsibility is lifted-- she doesn't know who she is any more and embarks on a journey to figure that out. She has spent her whole life in the background and when this younger man notices her and finds her interesting-- her crush on him is the catalyst that helps her move forward in her life. I would say that journey is heart-warming and heart-breaking...sometimes hilarious and sometimes cringe-worthy. Sally Field did a great job and so did the supporting cast.

There are a couple of really uncomfortable scenes but nothing graphic.
