John wasn't totally innocent here (SPOILERS)

I think John did have some sort of attraction to Doris, and not just as a friend.

He may not have been madly in love with her but, for a self-proclaimed shy and boring guy, he certainly knew to flirt with Doris. You don't just kiss someone you barely know (even if it was "supposed" to be on the cheek). The way he acted with her at the concert was not just polite. There was some chemistry going on, definitely. It was even kind of weird that he insisted that Doris come along with him and Brooklyn to the karaoke bar. Most guys on a date would say, "nice to see you" and go off to enjoy the date.

The ending of the movie was left to interpretation but, in all of Doris's other fantasies about John, they were just fantasies that never came to pass. In her last fantasy, it started with "Doris, wait." And as she got into the elevator, he said those exact words. That hadn't happened before. I think it's entirely possible that John may have, at that point, admitted to Doris that he did have some actual feelings for her.

Agreed on all counts. Good observations.

I agree too. We're supposed to think that the last scene where the elevator closes he finally admitted he's fond of her and to be honest I would jump in his place in a minute. All Doris had to do is lose the glasses. I don't care if she wore glasses, hell I do likely permanently, but she'd look like a million bucks otherwise and I'm in.

I don't think he led her own at all. I think you could argue that he used her when he was having relationship problems, but he was looking for a friend not a lover.

K and G is correct. I think at most he thought Doris could be a friend. I saw nothing unlike the previous posters that would indicate he was interested in her as a lover.

Nothing.

Now, did he do anything that Doris misunderstood the meaning of? Different question.

reply

She hoisted her up and carried her on his shoulders throughout the concert! Not to mention he spent the entire time there with her, as opposed to going to hang out with other people.

In the director's cut we learn that Doris, during her nightclubbing phase, was involved in some "train" action in the club's men's room, and won rave reviews for her oral skills. Word got back to John, and that was really why he showed some renewed interest in Doris at the very end.

I don't think John saw it as flirting, because he didn't see Doris as someone to flirt with. Older women tend to be treated like asexual, borderline invisible creatures. In his eyes he was probably just being kind to his weird, sad little friend. He never considered how she misinterpret it. But if she'd been younger he would have been more careful.

reply

He enjoyed the way she was looking at him and lead her on.
