Trolls got the forums closed - good job

So IMDB is eliminating the forums, getting rid of one of the most active movie and tv discussion forums on the internet. Whey? Well part of their explicit reason is that the forums no longer provide a "positive" experience. In other words, all the freaking trolls have generated so many complaints that IMDB is just going to drop it completely.

Good job, ass-hats.

Yeah it seems so, also likely because some people would hit report user just because they didn't agree with the comment even if it wasn't a troll post. I can easily imagine if there are 250 million IMDb users, IMDb over recent years getting 25 million reports a (d̶a̶y̶) month that they had to look at.

reply

Sucks, though. The forum is literally the only reason I come on this site.

Wait do you really think there are 250 million active IMDB users on message boards? Are you that dumb?

reply

I'm basing it on what IMDb says above themselves: "we have concluded that IMDb's message boards are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide." and using 10% of that figure. Plus I am also using figures that back the IMDb claim above up by Website Traffic Statistic company Alexa: http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/imdb.com and that IMDB is the number 47th most visited site on the Internet (27th in the US).

Having said that you are correct in one aspect, I put day in that post where I should have put month, so corrected and thank you.

Thanks for the excellent example, yellowflag, but I'm sure we don't need it. We all know how much people feel the need to be jerks on the internet. Just take your comment. You couldn't simply say that the number of 250mill was way too high. You had to form it as an insult, further proving that this forum is no longer a positive experience for anyone. So thanks for your contribution to getting the forum shut down forever. I hope I don't rediscover you on whatever the next place is that people go to discuss movies and TV.

I bitched about it on a Facebook post and called out the trolls. A friend of mine responded with a picture of Comic Book Guy sitting at a computer with the caption "pass the cheetohs please".

Do you really think IMDB is closing it because of trolls? LOL! They want to control their content more and are using this as an excuse. It is corporate corruption period.

The fact that no one can be nice and civil on this very post is evidence that you lot can't be trusted to have a proper discussion. Perhaps it's for the best... The trolls and cockroaches of the internet will have to find a new place to infect their idiotic hatred.

For the most part, IMDb has been a good place to be, so it's a shame that they only looked at the trolls when they made this decision. Some boards are worst than others, or at least were (I ended up giving up on the The Sopranos board back in the day, because the majority of it seemed to troll wars, but that was then), but at the end of the day most of us seemed capable of actually discussing the show, film, or even game we were talking about.

I will say that I found it silly that people in some forums were so SJW obsessed though. I'm not saying that SJWs themselves aren't annoying, but it seemed to me that the second a show/movie did something like included a female in a strong role or included a gay or black character it just had to be an SJW thing, it couldn't simply be because the writers wanted to write those kind of characters, or even that (in the case of black characters) no white characters auditioned, or were considered right for the part.

I'm not sure about the gay and black thing, but I do know that the second a woman seems to get a strong role, it has to be an SJW thing...

Sorry about the rant, it's kind of been building, and sadly I don't think I'm done.

Absolutely the abuse is part of it, also the fact that when someone doesn't like what you have to say they flag it whether it is abusive or not, as Col Needham said:

Message boards are quite a different thing than the rest of IMDb. For years, our customers have done nothing but complain about how the boards are run, what features are missing and how angry they are about how other users have treated them. This is reflected in the relative traffic shrinkage of the boards. We have reached the point where most of our customers do not even know they exist; many that do know about them have been scared away after bad experiences. We have lost a non-trivial number of customers due to bad experiences on the boards. This is wrong on so many levels.

Just keeping the old boards software running and the time we spend dealing with the fallout from abuse on the boards is preventing us from creating better features that benefit all users and from adding permanent content to IMDb.
