Why the bashing?

Things I liked:
New characters. Difficult to make them all interesting but they were all unique, even if you knew they were doomed owing to the events in ANH.
Droid that wasn't annoying, even though the characters thought so. I found this clever, especially as Jar Jar exists in the same universe.
First force user who wasn't a Jedi/Sith. Ok stereotyped asian but still imaginative.
Didn't rely on light-saber battles or other SW cliches.

Is there much bashing compared to the other Disney films? I remember people liking it fine. It's my favorite out of all the more recent ones, even Force Awakens.

reply

Same for me. I think the tone does not exactly match the other Star Wars films but for what the film was, I think it made sense.

reply

the negatives are usually for vader fan service and cgi Tarkin

The closest copy of the original cinema release of ANH I know of is on laser disk. Hurray for junk stores. Looking back it's amazing how the effects have dated and what remastering has done, but watching it in 1978 for the first time everything was real. Would anyone admit that they didn't know Tarkin was CGI without knowing Cushing died years ago?

reply

Yeah, I didn't think the Tarkin CGI was that bad. If you look at his mouth and lip movement, yeah it's noticeable. But I think it's the best that kind of effect has looked so far.

I REALLY LIKED THIS ONE...EASILY MY FAVORITE STAR WARS SINCE EWOKS WERE NEW...THE DROID WAS EXCELLENT AS WELL...A REAL STANDOUT.

reply

I enjoyed it.

I didn't think it was a particularly good film when I saw it in the cinema - it seemed chopped about and abrupt in places. I've watched it since and enjoyed it more - just one of those films that take a while to be appreciated.

I loved it when I saw it in theatres. I walked out feeling I'd seen a Star Wars film more than I did walking out of The Farce Awokens.
