Now that was a great episode.
Exactly what this show needs: more Daniel!
shareI also thought it was an excellent episode. Really intense, great acting! I was so relieved to see Daniel made the right decision at the end.
shareI would describe it as disturbing. Great and disturbing.
Excellent acting all around. Daniel never disappoints, he has a pain inside him and Ruben Blades knows how to show it in a subtle way.
This wasn't your typical Zombie Apocalypse episode... this one had depth.
Ruben Blades was brilliant in this episode.
shareGreat season so far in my opinion, each season has been better than the last.
shareWound scraping...no.
shareI know that in the case of an infected wound where tissue has died they will try to cut that tissue out; if it isn't too extensive, they may not have to amputate. And they did mention Daniel would require antibiotics (which they presumably had a limited supply of). But I myself have no formal medical training. Do you? Is there something they got wrong?
shareHi I am a retired registered nurse and practiced in the operating room. The wound "scraping" is called debridement. It is used extensively in burns and other traumatic injuries. Also in medical conditions such as Diabetes where tissue is compromised. The goal is to eliminate devitalized tissue, necrosis, tissue which has died . This dead tissue will never heal and must be removed because it will cause bacterial toxins to
circulate in the blood stream and lead to septicemia, which is blood infection going thru the body, which will likely cause death, or at least effecting good tissue ( organs , etc) Along with debridement , however , comes copious amounts of "irrigation" with sterile saline or sterile water. I doubt Daniel would be alive since besides antibiotics he needs WATER. He has scant chance at enough water , sterile, or otherwise to keep his wound cleansed. Also , diet plays a major role here , enough calories , enough 'good' food such as protein to
Help build new tissue. Bottom line, Daniel would not likely be alive.
I think Daniel is a great character, maybe he would make it cause he's so strong . But this is a fantasy program so anything goes .
This is still less than a year after the zombie outbreak began. These people still seem to have plenty of food around because stores in the area probably haven't been looted to the bare walls yet. Anything in a can is still good eating. Water seems to be in very short supply though. Or rather, there's plenty to go around but it's being controlled and withheld from people who need it. It doesn't seem like you'd need gallons of water to wash Daniel's wound though. And some good high proof alcohol (which his friend has more than a little of) makes a decent disinfectant. It is a little hard to believe Daniel could've walked all that way in the hot sun without water, but who knows - they were a long way from the city and they didn't show every step of his journey.
shareAlcohol could be used as an antiseptic but a sterile liquid would be best. Even urine is more appropriate as an antiseptic over alcohol. Urine is virtually sterile and has been used for centuries.
