NOW Madison can smell the dead bodies?

I laughed when Madison and Travis entered the empty supermarket and she covers her nose and gasps like all of a sudden she can smell rotting bodies? WTF? They've been living around this crap for months now and they've never complained about the smell of death before. Then she starts rifling thru their pockets like they'd have a map to the Colonia on them? Why? I doubt those people really lived around that place before the outbreak so why would they have that address on them and did Madison use Google to find out just where any address they did find would be? I think the internet is down.

Actually, they haven't been around it for months. And the short time they have been in the apocalypse, they've been on a yacht and cleared out hotel most of the time.

Why would someone unfamiliar with an area have a map? 
