The military

One that that gets me about TWD and FTWD is the military. Cannot fathom how they are overcome so quickly. I know it takes awhile to understand what is happening, etc, but still the portrayal of the military is not realistic.

I think the writers of this show and TWD have confused a zombie apocalypse with that of a virus outbreak like that of The Last Ship. Understandable that they don't want the military to be the central force of the series but to not have any presence other than what they showed initially in L.A. is just how they wanted to represent them is all. Their show, their writing.

I don't think the writers plan to ever reveal what actually caused basically every military in the world to fall into disarray, and that assumption is based upon how no foreign governments saw fit to provide aid to or exploit and conquer the broken United States.

The Russian military survived but has been busy "rescuing" Europe and the Middle East. Putin will be showing up in the US soon enough.

That might explain how, in the sixth season of The Walking Dead, Abraham stumbled upon the rocket-propelled grenades and launcher that had been kept by a fallen soldier.

Something other than the walking dead all on their own must have led to the military personnel's demise, and it would've had to involved infiltration of some kind.

One of the mistakes that people make is that they think just because the military isnt in plain sight there not there.
Also , soldiers have families aswell.Like in season 1 when the soldiers left Travis some/most probably abandoned there duties and went to try to go see there families, meaning that only a small fraction of the military may have stayed.

in season 1, you saw the military leaving their posts and returning to their families. it wasn't so much as being over taken as it was them quitting.
(there were still small units of military in season 3 of walking dead)

reply

The military thought they could handle the situation.

Remember in season 1 when Shane and Lori watched the Army dropping Napalm in Atlanta? The military figured that would solve the problem in the streets. It didn't.

So before long, the relentless nature of the outbreak just overwhelmed everyone.

The main thing to remember is that, in The Walking Dead universe, anybody who dies reanimates (just like in The Living Dead series) as a walking, so no scenario in this story would play out quite like plague containment situation. An entire city could instantly turn if certain wrong moves are made, like using a lethal chemical weapon or, say, dropping napalm on people while it's raining. There's a world of possibilities. Another vector is a lethal disease spread entomologically.
