After the mid-season finale I swore off this frustrating, mixed bag of a show. That is when it jumped off the deep end and I couldn't bear the faff.
I watched the mid-season premiere a few weeks after it aired, and was mildly interested. Nice tone. But I put it to bed.
Tonight, I watched episodes 9, 10, 11... 12, 13, 14... and 15. I couldn't stop. It was amazing. It blew me away. It was grounded in it's own mini stories and building arcs like it never has before. Red herring subtexts that played nicely from my perspective, as well as some absolutely gorgeous locations. And some funny lines! Ofelia and Alicia's journey into the hotel early on is a stand out scene for me, for it's jarringly amusing dialogue and the tension building in that claustrophobic setting.
And the final few episodes, I adored. Fascinating. I was not sure what was ever coming next, and it wasn't all even nearly as predictable as I could have predicted. Deus ex machines and convenient plotting is of course apparent in places (and one absolutely stunning, glaring goof), but with those moments the direction allowed me to feel excited or thrilled for the potential outcomes. It really felt like the second half of a really awesome show, despite the lumpy layers in its history. Season 2, part 2, felt like a promise was paid upon and then some. By the looks of the boards, it seems everyone is hailing it a failure. I did before tonight. But wow. It catapulted for me up there with the best of the walking dead, but fresher and better than the parent show at this same point.
Who knows? This show might become seriously awesome.
