Was the 2nd Bro Madison stabbed actually dead?

I got the feeling that it was intentionally ambiguous as to whether Brandon was dead and reanimating or alive and gargling for air because of his beating. Strand also gave Madison a look afterwards that led me to believe that he may have still been alive. Anybody think the same thing?

No, he had already turned. He was starting to do the walker moan when she stabbed him.

The thin bro looked turned, but his friend with light brown hair still looked alive but not turned. Madison still put him down by poking him through the ear. So cold.
