I thought he was just a lost and misunderstood teenager dealing with the Zombie Apocalypse, and to top it off never learned how to drive correctly and fell asleep at the wheel and paid the ultimate price for hanging out with Losers with guns! a cautionary tale if ever there was one....in my opinion

Some of his actions had no clear reasoning behind them, and from season 1, he came off as a little creep.
He held a child hostage. I couldn't stand him from that point forward.

I hate Travis and Liza more. Chris is just the end result of what happens when terrible parents no longer have the safety net of terrible public schools to ship their children off to every day while busy working at unfulfilling jobs and continuing to wallow in their own self pity and angst. That was probably the point all along.
