Really liked the movie but felt it could have been beneficial if they intercut the two timelines (young and old Saroo) throughout the entire movie. It would've been less "front-loaded" and the heavy drama could've been more evenly distributed.
That's what I thought it would be from the trailer. I think that would have been interesting. Only a very well structured screen play could have pulled that off. That actor playing the kid was so god i'm sad it seems like he's not getting any recognition.
It is much better as it is. This way we get to connect with the young Saroo. The emotional impact is much stronger when you are presented with a vulnerable kid in India, than grown up immigrant in Australia.
Perhaps the film should have started with Saroo's relationship with his mother. That would make it even more emotional.
The later parts in Australia felt a little disjointed, but nothing terrible. I still loved every minute of it.
I'm more inclined to agree with the op. They really dragged out the Dev Patel half and never actually gave much indication he'd spent any time looking for his family prior to Google Earth came about. For a weepie I didn't hear any sniffles at all in my full audience for the advanced preview last year. I think Miramax have made this all too obvious a choice for a cynical awards push. The script was far too on the nose. It's still a good example of the sub genre.
