Why Was the Orca Used on Mothra?

When Mothra hatches, we see her create all kinds of problems for the folks that are in the lab/area with her, & then we see Emma struggle to use the Orca for the correct frequency to tame her, but what I'm asking is why?

Traditionally Mothra has been a human friendly monster, so A: Why were they afraid & B: Why did she in turn attack? Granted we don't see Mothra interact with humans the rest of the movie but still I have to wonder what that was all about.

I don't think they knew much about Mothra's personality or history, and certainly not enough to assume she'd arrive friendly, especially since she's a newborn. Maybe her ancestors were nice to humans, but a baby might not behave the same, especially at first. That likely explains her actions. She's a newborn, and like a newborn human, she can't be expected to immediately act like a mature adult.

A: Well there was a giant monster in front of them they knew little to nothing about that was acting somewhat aggressively (though not attacking) and B: Because they shot her.
I don't get the confusion over that scene.

I simply took it as they needed a guinea pig and she was accessible.
