I didn't really understand what Elijah Woods said

To Nic Cage character, before he gets scared and angry and refuses to open safe.

Something about Cage planning it for a long time, was he meaning that the whole drug dealer back-plot was a red herring and that Nic knew the heist would mean both of them would have to disappear and leave their old lives behind forever?

PS. Clearly in the situation Elijah character should have gone ahead with Nic, I mean wth he have to lose? He admitted he hated his job and his gf left him (probably why Nic chose him to be sidekick). Yeh the ending sucked tbh, but like another guy said on this board, at least it was original and it sent a strong message also
