Yes I liked Godzilla 2014. It's a good film just not great. It wasn't the Godzilla movie I wanted but it was the Godzilla movie I needed. The movie delivered everything that I wanted in a Godzilla movie in certain doses and where as the 98 film was a abomination to watch even as a movie itself. I didn't have too much of a problem with the pacing or screen time of Godzilla. He was used when he was needed. The only major problem I have are the characters. Brian Cranston is the only actor who gives a incredible performance and killing him off in the first act was the biggest mistake. Aaron Taylor-Johnson was blandly written with nothing emotional to connect to.
Here is the thing about this when I rematched it a few weeks ago. In the first act it is this strong emotional drama about a father and son dealing with a personal loss. The movie opens with the mother of the family dying in a tragic accident and it shows how it has affected these two characters as time went on with a bit of a conspiracy element through in. But once the monsters arrives, all the emotion is gone and gets traded in for a big monster action movie which it does succeed at. The scenes with any of the monsters are atmospheric, suspenseful and visually-stunning. This is probably one of the few movies where it starts out strong with some great drama, loses its steam by the middle but wins you over by the finale when Godzilla show what he is really capable of. A lot of blockbusters these days usually have weak third acts so I give Godzilla credit for knowing how to give a strong ending.
Gareth Edwards has shown in his first film, Monsters, that he can direct good drama and story while Godzilla showed he can pull off the action and spectacle for a Hollywood blockbuster. We will see if he can marry the two in Rogue One. I don't hold too much against Gareth Edwards because he was working with a weak script and did the best that he could with what he got.
I will say that if this kaiju franchise is going to continue, Kong: Skull Island can't just be decent but has to be great. It has to surpass the flaws that were in Godzilla to show that it is a franchise that can grow and evolve. We will see if these problems will be improved in Skull Island.
