QUESTION - Did you Like the 2014 "GODZILLA" Film ?

Since "KONG: SKULL ISLAND" is going to take place in the same universe as it, I am wondering.....Did anyone here like the 2014 "GODZILLA" Movie....YES or NO ?

For me, my own answer is YES. What about everyone else ?

I was really excited for the 2014 Godzilla but it wasn't as awesome as it could have been. Too dark and not enough action. I'd understand the reticence to show too much Godzilla if a sequel had been set for release in 2015 or even this year, then they could show a ****load of action. Making us wait until 2018 or when the **** ever for the next Godzilla flick kinda sucks but hopefully the special effects will be just mindblowing by then.

Same thought goes for Kong: Skull Island next year. A year of post is a long time to make some wicked VFX so I hope they dont **** it up.

Yes I liked Godzilla 2014. It's a good film just not great. It wasn't the Godzilla movie I wanted but it was the Godzilla movie I needed. The movie delivered everything that I wanted in a Godzilla movie in certain doses and where as the 98 film was a abomination to watch even as a movie itself. I didn't have too much of a problem with the pacing or screen time of Godzilla. He was used when he was needed. The only major problem I have are the characters. Brian Cranston is the only actor who gives a incredible performance and killing him off in the first act was the biggest mistake. Aaron Taylor-Johnson was blandly written with nothing emotional to connect to.

Here is the thing about this when I rematched it a few weeks ago. In the first act it is this strong emotional drama about a father and son dealing with a personal loss. The movie opens with the mother of the family dying in a tragic accident and it shows how it has affected these two characters as time went on with a bit of a conspiracy element through in. But once the monsters arrives, all the emotion is gone and gets traded in for a big monster action movie which it does succeed at. The scenes with any of the monsters are atmospheric, suspenseful and visually-stunning. This is probably one of the few movies where it starts out strong with some great drama, loses its steam by the middle but wins you over by the finale when Godzilla show what he is really capable of. A lot of blockbusters these days usually have weak third acts so I give Godzilla credit for knowing how to give a strong ending.

Gareth Edwards has shown in his first film, Monsters, that he can direct good drama and story while Godzilla showed he can pull off the action and spectacle for a Hollywood blockbuster. We will see if he can marry the two in Rogue One. I don't hold too much against Gareth Edwards because he was working with a weak script and did the best that he could with what he got.

I will say that if this kaiju franchise is going to continue, Kong: Skull Island can't just be decent but has to be great. It has to surpass the flaws that were in Godzilla to show that it is a franchise that can grow and evolve. We will see if these problems will be improved in Skull Island.

Yes

What's missing in movies is same as in society: a good sense of work ethic and living up to ideals.

reply

Yes. It was alright. Nothing spectacular. A lot of the earlier GODZILLA films are better.

I don't think Sigourney Weaver would be available to do it.
Isn't she going to be doing Neill Blomkamp's "ALIEN 5" Movie around then ?

reply

If Alien 5 ever gets made. Neil Blomkamp says he is officially working on something else now.

Oh Really ?
I thought he delayed making it because Ridley Scott asked him to while he began filming "ALIEN: COVENANT".

Blomkamp directed that Clive Owen-BMW action short "The Escape" so it is nice he is starting to expand his range in genres.

Though it has its share of flaws (like any movie), count me in as liking it A LOT!

Of course, it upset some G-fans about changing its origins a little, and perhaps not linking it to 1954. I liked the fact, that they took Godzilla outside of the box and not being tied down to Godzilla 1954 (if one wants to see that, then they have the Heisei and Millennial series to watch).

Looking forward to what Legendary has in store in these future movies.

I love it

No. It was a disappointing and poorly paced film. Godzilla felt like an afterthought in his own film.

This movie really plays out like a high-tech 1960s Godzilla feature, which in several of those movies (especially MONSTER ZERO & GODZILLA VS. THE SEA MONSTER), Godzilla was somewhat of an afterthought. But I get what you are saying since this is the first movie of this series.

Ebirah, Horror of the Deep was supposed to be a King Kong movie if memory serves right.

I don't think I'd be so against G14, if the marketing and hype around it wasn't so misleading. I was expecting a solo, grim reminder akin to 54 and 84. What I got was a late Showa film masquerading as a a lone Godzilla flick. With none of the fun and excitement.

Essentially, G16 seems to be the movie I very much wanted to see 2 years ago.
