If you read some of the interviews, the main purpose of their mission is just to survey the geographic of the island because satellites can't see through the storms surrounding the island. John Goodman seems to have ulterior motives which the monsters on the island.

Yeah it states in the trailer it's strictly a survey mission, just to check it out. It's the era of satellites first appearing properly in space, so when that happens this island pops up. Folk must be sent out during the Vietnam war just to scout it. From what I've read anyway

What's missing in movies is same as in society: a good sense of work ethic and living up to ideals.
