It's pretty cool how the Peter Jackson Kong was set in the 1930's as a homage to the original film and now this one is set in the 1970's as what I can only presume is a homage to the Dino De Laurentiis Kong.
On top of that the 1970's is pretty much the most modern you can get where it would still be feasible that something like Skull Island would still be undiscovered, it would be ridiculous if you made it set in the present day but have Skull Island be just now discovered, an island of any significant size like that would have been discovered decades ago.
Plus it's just a cool idea to have Vietnam era soldiers fighting monsters.
I agree. I think the 70's setting is a bold and interesting choice, especially considering this is a movie that takes place in the same world as Godzilla, which was set in modern times.
Legendary and the director have already stated (If I remember correctly), that Monarch is also keeping Kong a secret from the world like they did with Godzilla and the MUTOs in the 2014 film.
so my question is, does every one who goes to skull island in the film end up dieing? how else would a island with a 100 foot gorilla be kept a secret from the 70s until modern day? unless there is some government hush hush?
I think several governments will be involved with the island's secrecy. If Skull Island turns out to be the Monster Island of this continuity, Kong will probably be seen more as the hero fighting the worse monsters. They might try and keep him protected just in case. I doubt too many people will like the idea, but I think Godzilla will be hinted at in this film. Godzilla predates these events, so I don't see why not.
I'd much prefer the governments knew nothing about this island until they land on it in this film. rumours of a lost island at the most and it should be heavily covered in cloud for a lot of the time so not many have come across it.

I really wanted this film to be set before the 1930s story and be nothing to do with Toho's monster line but i've got used to the 70s setting now. it makes more sense than being set in modern times.

Just assume the government(s) is keeping Skull Island a secret, as opposed to nobody noticing it. Not that that would be too far fetched, even in these modern times.
right, because governments are so known for keeping things like this a secret and not using them to their advantage
if Skull Island had been definitively found prior to this more exploration and attempts to experiment and investigate the creatures would have already happened
It's an absurd explanation that anyone is 'keeping' Skull Island a secret
the whole point of Skull Island is that it is insanely hard to find as it is not only blocked by cloud/fog, but storms, rocky conditions, making its access mostly only by plane and with someone knowing where they're heading

Taking what to their advantage? The island and its secrets, or telling the world about it? What would telling people about an island of dinosaurs and giant apes accomplish? Other than fear and skepticism. Not to mention keeping a foreign power from learning of it. Like the Soviet Union for example.

Of course. But I doubt anyone wrote a newspaper article about it or reported it on TV.

Why? Do you really think the US government would allow knowledge of such a place get out? And for what?

If anyone knows about the island then i hope it's just vague rumours that have been talked about for years. if you have the US government knowing pretty much everything about the island then I think it takes some of the mystery and awe away from the beginning of the film. it should be pretty much a lost world.

I doubt the government will know everything. And because they don't will likely be a big reason why they keep things quiet.
Simply put, it HAS to be relatively modern day, if they are going to tie it to Godzilla, but it can't be TOO modern, because with the Internet, Google Maps, and the such, there's no way the island could've been undiscovered by that point.
