What was the cause of the knife fight seen in the trailer?

When the sequence when you see Kong's head in the trailer, you also see two individuals knife fighting. What was the cause behind the knife fight?

That appears to be an American and Japanese soldier fighting to the death. I would assume during WWII. How they got there is anybody's guess.

I'd have to watch it again but I thought it was Jackson and Hiddleston fighting.
