Should Jordan Vogt-Roberts take up the mantle for the Godzilla sequels?
Yes or No?
shareI can see this being the case and I have a feeling he'll certainly be offered the role. And if he does well with that, they'll no doubt have him do Godzilla vs. Kong, because it would thusly show he has a strong understanding of both characters. But we'll have to see how Kong: Skull Island is like first.
shareIf this gets well received, then he will be too much occupied with directing new Star Wars movie, so he will probably be out.
On a more serious note, I would love to see Gareth returning to director's chair for GvK.
I think after what's happened on Rogue One with Gareth, he'll probably do a smaller movie for the time being.
shareI'm kind of shocked he was even offered Kong to be honest. The Kings of Summer is a decent film, but I gotta assume there are more talented directors that were willing to take on a project like this.
shareAs I stated before, Legendary is approaching this like a baseball team utilizing analytics. They are not looking for that one big (and expensive) name, but rather some up and coming filmmaker, whom they feel is the right person for a particular project. Gareth Edwards and Jordan Vogt-Roberts, were relative newcomers when Legendary approached them to helm their giant monster movies, though Edwards was a more obvious choice. I guess they saw something in Jordan Vogt-Roberts, enough to hand him the keys to King Kong.
If KONG: SKULL ISLAND is a success, I have no doubts that Jordan would probably be the leading candidate to direct either GODZILLA 2 or GODZILLA VS. KONG. If it won't be him, then Legendary will probably go back to the well and see what up and coming filmmakers are out there. Guillermo del Toro might be the only big name that could be in the mix, since he currently has a working relationship with Legendary.
