About releasing this in March...

That's not a traditional month to let fly what's presumed to be a huge fx-heavy movie, one probably rated PG-13 at most, with any intention of recouping huge budgets right away like they could with a Summer release date. I'm hoping, praying actually, that within 4 months from now, consumers will have the option of watching this and other event films On Demand, at home. Theaters will still make money on movies as long as they start to cater more to customer comfort than concession prices, but personally I'd rather pay 20 bucks to watch this in my own home a couple of times in a row on opening weekend on the 60" Samsung and minus the cellphone a-holes in a theater.

I think we could see that happen within a few years. The poor box office track record of this year's summer movies shows that people are getting tired of wasting their money on the theatre experience if the movie itself is not that great to begin with.

However, Kong: Skull Island is still a movie I would pay to see in Imax because of the visual experience.

reply

Oh I would most definitely pay to see this at an Imax! There are a couple here in the Puget Sound region. My beef is with the high ticket/concession prices, I think that all theaters need to be more vigilant about preventing cell-phone usage and disrupting the movie for civilized, mannered customers. Take a cue from the Alamo Drafthouse! :)

Why should FX-heavy blockbusters be confined to the summer months? It just creates an over-crowded market of very similar movies, whereas (1) I think audiences want to have a wider choice throughout the year, and (2) studios need to look at what their competitors are releasing at any given time.

Movies like "Warcraft", "The BFG" and "Independence Day 2" did really poorly at the box-office, whereas a smaller-scale horror movie like "Lights Out" (which you might expect to open in October) did pretty well during the summer. Why? Because it got positive reviews, but also because there weren't that many horror movies being released. Likewise, in the past ten years, we've seen more and more big budget FX-movies being released in May and June, to be ahead of the competition.

So it may seem like a gamble on the studio's part, but it might in fact turn out that being the one blockbuster in March is a better way to recoup that production budget than occupying one of the many spots in a cramped summer schedule.

That's a really good point. Deadpool came out last February and tore up the box office for a hard-R-rated movie so there's a great chance that Kong: Skull Island will prevail as well, seeing as it's going to be PG-13. There are a couple of other high-profile flicks coming out around the same time, like a new Wolverine film, and Sleeping Beauty for the kiddies, but I think Kong will own them.

The thing that worries me is Beauty & The Beast. Disney has an enormous following, and seeing as how this a remake of one of their most popular films, it'll perform tremendously well, I imagine. I just hope that, being released on the same day as B&B, that Kong doesn't get overshadowed by all the hype and talk of another Disney movie.

reply

Whoops! I thought I'd heard Sleeping Beauty, not Beauty & The Beast. Maybe there will be some semblance of the traditional Kong beauty/beast lore in Kong: Skull Island to show Disney how it's really done :)

There's a quick shot in the preview that shows Brie Larson and Tom Hiddleston looking up at something and Brie is crying...

I heard that there wasn't going to be any beauty/beast vibe in K:SU, but it would be nice if there was some sort of small reference to it :)

reply

There's gotta be at least a passing reference to it. Why else put a blonde in the film? Even though she isn't radiant-blonde like Wray, Lange, Watts, etc.

Maybe the preview that drops around 11/18 will hint at it :)

I think studios are experimenting with having March being the new opening for the summer blockbuster season.

What's missing in movies is same as in society: a good sense of work ethic and living up to ideals.
