This film needs to do big numbers on its OW.

If WB and Legendary want this to do well at the domestic box office, it's imperative that it does big numbers on its opening weekend, because it's going to get slaughtered by Beauty and the Beast a week later and possibly see a 65%+ drop on its box office intake.

It's gonna be a tough battle, and I do find it funny that a King Kong movie is competing with a movie called "Beauty and the Beast." haha

KONG: SKULL ISLAND.

Is beauty and the beast really that popular?

reply

I would say so. I think it's going to be the biggest grosser out of all the live-action Disney remakes so far. A lot of people in my area were gong crazy about it when the new trailer for it dropped.

I do think Beauty and the Beast will make a billion worldwide. However, I also think Skull Island will do well, too, particularly overseas. Beast will probably be rated PG, whereas Skull Island will probably go for a little older. I don’t think they will be going after the exact same audience.

I have a very long ignore list

That older audience were kids when the animated film came out, twenty-five years ago. Never underestimate the power of nostalgia (which is what Disney is banking on).

Beauty & the Beast the 91 animated film is insanely popular, especially in the USA- BUT I would argue that a big portion of fans seem to be at odds with the new Beast live adapation design, he looks a bit odd, and the casting of Emma Watson

I don't necessarily see BEauty having any effect on this. The markets are not the same. I'm in my 20s and love Disney animated version of Beauty but it doesn't magically make me not want to see this instead

if anything one could argue that something like the live adaption of Beauty & the Beast might be something that many people, especially budget concerned family's, will wait to see on DVD or Netflix at home. after all its looking to be a scene for scene remake practically

sorry but I think you're pretty off base there, the majority of people interested in Beauty & the Beast are going to be kids and family's, totally different audience than who you would expect Kong: Skull Island to attract

Not to say the audiences don't mix at all, but one is a Disney fair tale and the other is a monster movie where people are liking going to get torn to shreds by giant spiders and dinosaurs and things

I think you're pretty off base about one effecting the other at the box office. A better concern would be if an adult oriented big action film was releasing around the same time as Kong, something like Fast & the Furious. because then you might find a big sharing of the same audience

This is targeted more towards adults than children, and Beauty/Beast for obvious reasons is vice versa

good insight.

as a 20yo male i can confirm that my age demographic is only interested in kong and not b&b.
