This is horrible

This sure ain't The Red Road. Watched 15 minutes for Christina Hendrix and decided she wasn't going to get naked to make up for the bad acting and writing.

Does it get better or is this pretty much it?

If you only watched 15 minutes, then you don't know what this is, flunky.

Honestly, I felt the same way when the show first premiered. But now that the story and the characters have had a few episodes to get all their chess pieces set in place, I'm actually starting to like it. The concept of a bunch of low lifes banding together to retrieve stolen loot from a failed heist is what originally grabbed my attention before I even saw the pilot.

I didn't care much for the first episode. However, upon a second viewing, I thought it was much more enjoyable when you have a better understanding of the characters.

reply

I thought The Red Road was dreadful. but I don't think this is much better. save for MKW, the dude who plays Raul, Jimmi Simpson and the fact that I can have it on in the background when it starts to over-reach.

now Rectify is a good Sundance show. hence it still being around while The Red Road is not.

remember, if you don't have anything nice to say ...you're probably a butthole

I gave it two episodes. Was unimpressed and that scene in the river with the alligator and immediately after made it clear that the standards are pretty low, so I bailed. It was laughable. Bad TV trying hard to be a quirky, Elmore Leonardesque pulp crime drama.

reply

Except Elmore Leonard was good. No one ever translated his stuff to screen correctly, not even Tarentino who was kind of doing stuff close to him in tone before actually optioning the actual stuff only to mess it up.

True Romance was the closest I ever saw to Elmore Leonard stuff and that was a reworked Tarentino script like Natural Born Killers was

Not slamming Leonard. I'm saying that this show strives to match that kind of vibe. Now, I've never read Leonard so I can't say for sure, but I'm pretty sure this show fails at what it's trying to do, because even with talented actors, it's just bad. Other than Hap and Leonard, the other characters are uninteresting caricatures, with just enough "quirk" in them that the show's creators will hope that viewers find them interesting. Fat guy who is clumsy but in therapy? How interesting. Grace Jones wanna-be killer? My, how edgy. Idealistic 60's hippy who is certainly concealing a dark side? Sign me up! Etc.

Justified would like a word with you.

reply

I think Justified was loosely based on one short story of his and I did like the first few seasons

When I think of Leonard though, I think of Glitz, Freaky Deaky, Killshot, Get Shorty, Maximum Bob, Rum Punch...

And if you want to read an even funnier guy go for Carl Hiaasen. I haven't read him in a long time but recommend Tourist Season and Native Tongue. Also Strip Tease was a great book even though they ruined the movie

Hiaasen can be really good, funny. Have you read Tim Dorsey? His anti-hero Serge Storms is a great character and his books are really humorous as well. Dorsey's books are also set in Florida.

reply

Heard of Dorsey but never read him. Probably should. Has been a while since I took the time to enjoy a novel

I like Hiaasen a lot.
I couldn't agree more about Strip Tease movie.
I'd say for early stuff look at Double Whammy as well, and take a look at Sick Puppy if you get a chance too.
Funny and well written.

Read Double Whammy. It was that Religious Bass fishing theme right? I think it was his 2nd book and he introduced that ex governor that lived off the roadkill LOL. Skin Tight was good also with that Geraldo caricature who always tried to get assaulted!

I've stayed with it because I hate to give up on a show in its first season, like I hate to read only half a book.
But I just can't get into it. What's to get into? I'm always left feeling like I'm taking absolutely nothing away from it. It's just meh. Glad it's almost over.
