Blood Wars budget & box-office

“Underworld: Blood Wars,” the fifth entry in the ongoing saga of a spandex-sporting vampire badass, is eyeing a $15 million debut. The franchise has racked up more than $500 million globally and the films tend to play well overseas. Kate Beckinsale returns as Selene, the toothsome exterminator who drives the films. The latest “Underworld” cost $35 million to produce.

So according to Variety, Blood Wars had a budget of only $35 million, which is exactly half of the production budget of Awakening. Having seen the film, I can say it looked much better than Awakening. $70 million was WAY too much for that one.

That means the movie won't have a problem making a profit, as it has already gained $42 million from countries around the world.

The box-office projectionists are estimating a debut of only $14-15 million which would be the weakest entry in the entire franchise. All of the previous movies debuted with over $20 million.

What do you guys think about these?

reply

I figured the budget would be less than Awakening, but not half as much. That's good news though. That projection for the weekend seems too low, I guess we'll see.

Have you got a link to the article? Seems off for Sony to slash a budget this much of a prominent franchise though I suppose they'll be wanting to make as much money back after last year's dissapointments

reply

Look at Inferno. It had a budget of only 75 million dollars. Angels & Demons was 150. And it's also Sony. They probably knew that Awakening made so much back then because 3D was still popular in 2012. Also, Blood Wars will now be released in 3.065 theaters. Doesn't look that bad anymore. But I really hope it can open with 15+ million dollars. But I don't know. I have a feeling that this one might not even do 10... I hope I am wrong. I really want this film to make 100+ in worlwide total.

With a $35M budget, the break even point would be about $70M

But that isn't factoring in marketing, which had to be at least $15-$30M on its own.

So really...to be in good shape this movie needs to be pulling in the $100M range worldwide, and that just isn't going to happen.

There won't be an Underworld 6.

$100M is locked!

I agree, Bu54LB. It hasn't opened in the UK, Japan, or the US yet. It should make around $100 million, not counting DVDS, streaming, and television rights.

reply

Agreed. It has already made over $42M so far and hasn't opened int hose territories. So I'd say a $100M worldwide take is very attainable. It's profit will probably determine budget for a final movie more than whether it will get one. If they know they can make one on a small budget, then they might do it for a final entry, which will probably garner higher box office being called a final chapter. Tends to draw in fans from the whole franchise. Even if they stopped watching they like to see how it ends.

reply

Hi jberning. We are in agreement, the producers will make a tidy profit on this film and then decide on the next film that probably will be the last.

reply

it will only get about 4 million from the uk...no one here is that bothered about it

Not if you look at the numbers for previous Underworld movies, http://www.boxofficemojo.com/showdowns/chart/?id=underworldvs.htm

UW had a production budget of $22m and a worldwide gross of $95 and got a sequel. UW3 had a production budget of $35m and a worldwide gross of $91m and got a sequel. UW4 had a production budget of $70m and a worldwide gross of $160m and got a sequel.

You need to remember there is also ancillary revenue, e.g. DVDs and TV sales, not to mention graphic novels etc.

In addition, the foreign totals for the first three UW movies ran from about $45 to $49 million. UW5 is already at $42m and hasn't opened in the UK or Italy or Japan yet. Don't know if it's opening in China (the previous UW movies didn't) but if it is, it will do well there as a fantasy pic.

I do believe that it's more than $42m for overseas. Because that number was 2 weeks ago, and hasn't been updated since.

Yes, that's right. I should have said '$42m as of 12/18/2016.'

I'm seeing it and it should do okay till Resident Evil comes out.

"Rise of the Lycans" costed 35 millions and made 92 millions worldwide...so if UBW would make at least 100/120M would be not so bad!

reply

It's been 3 days since its release in US cinemas, and there it grossed over 13 million. That's almost as much as the foreign total opening weekend gross. (According to box office mojo, the foreign total from December 2-4, 2016 was 16 million.)

The US box office is almost as big as that of the rest of the world combined!

I guess this is because the US has more theatrical engagements than the rest of the world.

It got around 11 mark .not bad

wiki says: Budget $35 million
Box office $78.2 million

Box Office Mojo. Retrieved January 31, 2017.

reply

factor in $20 million promo so total $55 million box office total was $78.2 million But the studio only gets about $45 million from that so the movie made no money at all

reply

Theaters get the opening week $, and on foreign $ the producers only get
A % of that total, they dont get all of the money.

A rule is it has to make more than the budget here in usa to make a profit.
This one is close to the budget, so it might break even, then the profit will
be dvd's and sell to cable tv, etc.
