Very disappointed so far...BORING..UGH help me because I want to like it

I had to turn this off last night 40 minutes into episode 2. So far totally boring, nothing interesting whatsoever except this pope is an oddball and so far totally unorthodox and not realistic at all. I love Jude Law and really trying to get into this but so far what I have seen is awful.

When does this pick up? It is going to take some effort to turn this back on again.

OK, I get it. You want a dashing and handsome Jude Law and total realism. To put Jude Law in this role is another facet of playing with our expectations. Is there any institution left that is above parody in the 21st century? Probably not.

Yes, it was totally boring and not interesting whatsoever and unrealistic.

reply

I'm 15 minutes in and I give up ?

reply

Believe it or not, this is far less boring than Paolo Sorrentino's 2015 film Youth.

reply

I'm bailing after the first episode, just finished. Love Jude Law and yes the production is lush. But I totally don't get it. Maybe you have to be religious or something? Next!

reply

like most good shows, you have to stick through the first four episodes, the rest of the season really makes up for the slow start.

Almost every great show I can remember had a great pilot episode. This did not. The modern Catholic church and papacy, unlike the inner city drug trade in The Wire, is not an inherently interesting subject, so in order to capture the interest of HBO viewers, TYP had to really give them a reason to watch and keep watching. They failed to do that. It's so boring that I have no clue what this show is or why it exists.

Some things are inaccessible and lack broad appeal because they are deep, complex, and intelligent. Other things are inaccessible because they're lame. TYP seems more like that latter than the former. What was HBO thinking?

reply

Amen to that--pun intended. 😉 Glad I watched the whole thing, because it gets more interesting with each episode. The season finale left me really looking forward to the second season. 😎

In the movie the first 20 minutes maybe boring what is the most important portion of the movie it's where all the characters were Stabley S-t for all of their motives are revealed and it gives you the main clues if you don't pay attention to anything else in the movie a patent to the first 20 minutes does big exposition dumps then you get a little expedition as you go see the movie in a TV series those first four episodes are that big exposition done for you get main characters introduced in innocence of motive this series is no different it's a miniseries so you've got a stick in there it's only 10 episode people right about Tian you might be surprised then again maybe you won't but you can't judge it on the first 20 minutes and you can't get it on the first two episodes

i'm really enjoying it. i know nothing about the Catholic Church so i'm going in this wide eyed. I think so far it's great.

reply

It's ambiguous as hell, but "boring" it is not!

reply

Very ambiguous and a little boring... but a bunch of great actors, great acting, beautiful scenery. I'm 4 episodes in and not sure I can come back for a 2nd season... IF there is one.

can't outrun your own shadow

reply

Oh man--you totally nailed it! That's why I have to watch the whole thing over again! 😁
