TYP: A Study of Loneliness?

One of my Facebook friends posted a unique article that explores a concept and an aspect of Lenny (and the clergy for that matter) I hadn't thought of before.

The following is a Q&A with Paolo Sorrentino:

How did you come up with the concept of doing a show on the papacy? And why an American Pope?

I always wished to investigate deeply the secret of loneliness. Real loneliness, permanent loneliness, not the more common but more superficial loneliness that consists in not having anyone to chat to at hand. A priest who is also incidentally a man of power like the Pope is the most emblematic example of the secret of this loneliness. And an American in a court of Italian and European cardinals is even more lonely.

Novel idea that. Imagine a journalist actually going to the source for information before writing a piece. Good one.

It really comes through, as with many of Shakespeare's kings.

Yes it's lonely at the top. At least Kings and Queens and heads of state have partners -- a spouse in which they can confide share their loneliness and uncertainties, good moments and bad. Some have siblings, parents and children too. The Pope has no one. And he has this persona to maintain to a public that is not always kind, rarely forgiving and have unhealthy diets of what type of news, entertainment and information they prefer to consume. And he's carrying a lot of baggage from his childhood. It was a mind-blowing statement when Cardinal Spencer said he needs to go to Venice and bury to empty coffins. Sorrentino isn't spoon feeding us by any means. And I like that.

What a nice surprise to see you here!!!

Here's an IE LINK for you:

No discussions there yet ...

but eventually the 3 MAIN REVELATIONS xxpo came up with may show up there.

It would also be nice if BLU could post his GARDEN theory about the PLANE there in THE YOUNG POPE SECTION as well.

And xxpo may also eventually post their GARDEN of EDEN as a WOMB theory there (and LENNY also being inside of one by living there inside of the VATICAN).

BLU:

Some have siblings, parents and children too. The Pope has no one.

You say LENNY has NO ONE???

What about SISTER MARY who the others also thought was a CO POPE???

And SPENCER was also HIS MENTOR. In fact he also still seems to be his MENTOR as demonstrated by the scene where he tells him to bury the 2 EMPTY COFFINS in VENICE.

I see no indication that he grew up inside the Vatican. He probably even hasn't been there much before the conclave and his election.

reply

You might be right.

There's a MARATHON session on today, so perhaps one can also watch some of it and keep an EYE OUT to see if the place where he's taken as a child looks like it's the VATICAN.

It doesn't and there is no orphanage in the Vatican.

reply

Then maybe there should also be one there so these guys with NO KIDS will also KNOW FIRST HAND how DIFFICULT it can be to RAISE them???

MSNBC also just had a PRIEST on who was discussing the CHURCH and the way JESUS would never EXCLUDE certain groups of people the way another RADICAL FORM of it does that also has connections to TRUMP and to some of his ALT RIGHT FOLLOWERS.

Cardinals raising orphans doesn't sound like much fun for anyone involved.

Yes, especially NOT for the WOMEN who were FORCED to have UNWANTED KIDS by them, or by the UNWANTED CHILDREN who would be born to MOTHERS who didn't want them.

And even when someone LIKE ESTHER wanted her child, it also didn't look like it was VERY MUCH FUN for her to have LENNY always there wanting to be a part of her RAISING HER SON.

And then there's also VIOELLO who is also BUSY RAISING the other boy that he takes care of after his VATICAN DUTIES are done.

Not that I agree with a lot of the rules that churches want their members to follow but for me the solution is simple: If I don't like the club rules, I don't join the club. No one is forcing me to be catholic (and I live in Italy ^^), no one is forcing me to join the bowling club. As long as the country I live in stays like this, I see no problem.

Be glad you don't live in the USA where all 3 BRANCHES of GOVERNMENT are being run by RIGHT WING FANATICS now ...

who not only want to do away with the right of a woman to have an ABORTION ...

but are also busy SHUTTING DOWN ABORTION clinics by passing really stupid and unnecessary laws to close them down.

PLUS they also STOLE the right of the last POTUS to APPOINT another member of the SUPREME COURT, which means the CURRENT POTUS will now appoint another RIGHT WING ANTI ABORTION FANATIC to the CURRENTLY 8 member and EVENLY SPLIT COURT which will also lead to a 5 to 4 VOTE when they have 9 MEMBERS of it again.

You may have also heard about doctors and nurses being MURDERED over here even as they sat there inside their CHURCH???

And BUSINESSES run by the CATHOLIC CHURCH have also gotten LAWS passed so that they don't have to PAY for the BIRTH CONTROL of the WOMEN who work for them.

Usually a woman could also go to the FAMILY PLANNING CLINIC to get some if they can't afford to pay for it (BC PILLS are also VERY EXPENSIVE over here), but now the POTUS is also busy trying to SHUT DOWN FAMILY PLANNING places as well.

There's definitely a WAR on WOMEN going on over here.

So not joining THE CLUB as you put it also won't do any good over here where CHAOS RULES the DAY with a small handful of FANATICS and ZEALOTS who keep passing NEW LAWS in efforts to FORCE their RELIGIOUS VIEWS onto others who don't share them.

Anyhow, LENNY also has HIS MENTOR SPENCER to talk to. And he also has SISTER MARY.

So one also doesn't see him as being as LONELY as was stated in the OP.

Because aren't both SPENCER and SISTER MARY are also both AMERICANS???

I'm glad I don't live in the U.S.A., believe me. But I pray constantly for its citizens.

It would be nice if we could keep the recent politics of the US out of our discussions as this is an international board. Some of these threads go off on tangents that astound me. Talk about roller coasters without a track!!

Lenny has Sister Mary, a nun as a friend/mentor. But as his dwindling support net diminishes he is more and more alone. Luckily he sees Sofia as someone who is open to not only discussing things with him, supports him (whether she agrees with him or not) and recently has been an adviser who is opening his eyes. He said he needed to see her not wanted to see her. When she told him to be careful of that Holy Father I think she meant it in a way that was cautionary as maybe he was learning to reach out and it was more of a joking tone than admonishment.

And God (or whoever) help you if more members of the Supreme Court die (they are not that young...).
What a country imposes on their citizens and what people allow a religion to impose on them are still different things in my opinion.
And yes they are both Americans.
Spencer is often not much in the mood to be friendly or mentoring or anything really because he is so angry about not becoming Pope. And confiding in him might not be the best idea because who knows what ears it will reach. Sister Mary he can confide in but it is not like she can really understand what it is like to be a cardinal, let alone the Pope, how could she?
So I think it is a very lonely place he is in.
The current Pope is lucky I guess that he has an Ex-Pope to talk to :)

reply

The current Pope Francis is from South America. If you travel to his homeland, the Catholic faith is very strong. And it is beautiful in a way that you do not experience in North America. Pope Francis has Benedict around but I am not sure they are on the same playing field. And he has a lot of resistance from within the Catholic church I imagine. He may very well feel isolated and alone the same way Lenny does. Of course, I have no idea but isn't it strange that we are actually wondering if a Pope can be lonely or not?

reply

I am sure they have different opinions, probably even concerning outfits (Prada Pope...^^) but still it is a unique situation that might be helpful. I think he meets lots of resistance, funnily for being more or less the opposite of Lenny, damned if you do, damned if you don't ^^

reply

That's because the U.S. is predominately Protestant nation. In South America, Catholicism reigns supreme. Its a throwback to the colonial days, several hundred years ago.
