Underrated! Deserved more love from the Academy!

I got a chance to watch this one a couple of nights ago and I found it surprisingly good. A strong 8/10.

I thought the plot was interesting, the performances from Pitt and Cotillard were incredible, and the cinematography and recreation of the time and places of WWII were amazing.

And yet, this film got NO recognition from the Academy. I certainly enjoyed it more than Manchester by the Sea and I'd say it's a better film than Hidden Figures as well (even though I did enjoy that one). Thinking about it, I'd probably rank it higher than Hell or High Water, too.

Sadly, not only did it get no love from the Academy, but it also underperformed at the box office. Only $40 million domestically? That's a damn shame.

For anyone who hasn't seen this one, you should check it out as soon as possible. And for those who have, why do you think it failed to perform, both in terms of Oscar recognition as well as in terms of box office receipts?

Totally agree. Loved this movie so much. Every person (a dozen people or so) who took my recommendation to see this movie absolutely loved it. Marion Cotillard was incredible in this film.

Also one of my favorites of last year. Some of it was personal for me because it's a combination of a bunch of genres I really like (old fashioned WWII movies, spy movies, old fashioned romantic dramas). It was top shelf entertainment all around.

I would have given it noms for BP, Director, Actress for Cotillard, screenplay, cinematography, costumes, and production design. Probably wins for screenplay and costumes.

I think this kind of big romantic drama just isn't in fashion right now. Bad buzz from Pitt's divorce probably didn't help at the box office, either.

I wanted to like it more, but I think while being above average, it still disappointed me. I enjoy all the same subjects you do, Brad Pitt, Marion Cotillard, WWII, spy movies, etc, but somehow it just missed the mark for me. I also agree with you about the box office. There are some horrible movies that seem to make oodles of profit, while a decent film like this fails. It stinks, but hopefully, we'll see something better from these two next time.

Great movie, but full of white people, no social message, and no superheroes, so no recognition.
