Underrated! Deserved more love from the Academy!
I got a chance to watch this one a couple of nights ago and I found it surprisingly good. A strong 8/10.
I thought the plot was interesting, the performances from Pitt and Cotillard were incredible, and the cinematography and recreation of the time and places of WWII were amazing.
And yet, this film got NO recognition from the Academy. I certainly enjoyed it more than Manchester by the Sea and I'd say it's a better film than Hidden Figures as well (even though I did enjoy that one). Thinking about it, I'd probably rank it higher than Hell or High Water, too.
Sadly, not only did it get no love from the Academy, but it also underperformed at the box office. Only $40 million domestically? That's a damn shame.
For anyone who hasn't seen this one, you should check it out as soon as possible. And for those who have, why do you think it failed to perform, both in terms of Oscar recognition as well as in terms of box office receipts?
