God, this guy is prolific! I only saw 'Tom at the Farm' a few weeks ago and already Dolan's new film is showing at Cannes. Here Peter Bradshaw's review:
The reviews for this have been amazing. I just saw Laurence Anyways and have yet to see Tom At The Farm. Seems he keeps getting better with every film.
While both above statements by 'cathy-earnshaw' and 'C_h_r_i_s_t_o_p_h_e_r' may be true (in fact, that he is prolific most certainly is), it is worth pointing out that neither of their statements actually supports their conclusions. The OP draws a link between when SHE saw 'Tom at the Farm' and the fact that Xavier Dolan has a film at this years Cannes. That is a false equivalence for obvious reasons. The second poster, states that he has seen ONE of Dolan's films and it "seems he keeps getting better with every film". Granted, he does not expressly sate that he has only seen the one of Dolan's films, but the statement "I just saw 'Laurence Anyways' and have yet to see 'Tom At The Farm'" certainly suggests that's the case. In any event, if he had any interest in backing up his conclusion, the example of the film he saw should have been followed by another film he saw, not one he has yet to.
I've actually seen every film up to Laurence Anyways that he has made. Thanks for writing a book as to why me and the OP are wrong with our opinions. Do you not have anything better to do? Get a life bro.
Ok, great that you've seen all of his films (genuinely), that does not however affect the point I was making at all. In fact, I made allowances for the possibility that you had seen other (or indeed all) of his work. Further, not only did I at no point say that 'you and the OP are wrong with your opinions', I didn't even imply it. I think you need to re-read what I wrote; all whopping 9 lines of the "book"!
I'm so proud of Dolan. I related a lot to his first film, and made a point to attend the premiere of Heartbeats at TIFF. It's amazing how much he has evolved from each film. They say he has a good chance of winning the Palme, but I would prefer to reserve any expectations just incase. He's also adorable in person.
