You're watching a SQUARED image?
OOOH, WHAT NEXT? Circle-Vision? TriangleScope? Hexagons? Trapezoids? Parallelograms?? Ridiculous. Contemporary screen dimensions should be 1.77:1 and wider. None of this SQUARE crap.

shareWhat about... letting the artist choose whatever the *beep* he thinks will convey what he has to say better.
Later that day, after tea... I died, suddenly.
Perhaps if you watch the film, you'll realize why he decided to frame the film in that odd aspect ratio. It's not simply to be artistic, it works as a sort of story component. Don't ask why, just watch the movie and see for yourself. You may be pleasantly surprised.
shareI will eventually, if only for the novelty of it.
sharelol. so let me get this straight...So, you start a thread to complain about an aspect (literally, the aspect ratio, lol) of a film you hadn't even *bothered* to watch (as of yet?)...
Sheesh, take the advice of the poster above and watch the darn film and maybe you'll realize it has a technical (and ultimately, emotional) purpose to the director's story(telling)...
I can understand people and their gripes...when they've watched a film...But, complaining about a film you haven't bothered to see is just trolling..
Please. You've clearly missed the point entirely. If you were to watch a film with the aspect ratio / dimensions of a keyhole, you'd no doubt be glowing about it, about the joy of its unorthodoxy.
shareI guess i missed it. Or were you being facetious? What *was* your point? The film is not unwatchable at 1:1 unless you have some curious visual impairment that necessitates everything to be viewed in WIDESCREEN, lol.
You're the one who seems not to understand.
You call the choice of ratio "crap," after all. You seem to think your opinion of rightness/wrongness RE the aspect ratio is more valid than the filmmaker's choice! Like it's some kind of technical misstep or oversight.
I'm pointing out that it was a purposeful call the filmmaker made in order to tell a visual story to his liking.
Let me guess...you still haven't seen it...Or, if you have, by all means, please enlighten us (for novelty sake of course).
That was awesome!!! Xavier Dolan is awesome!! That scene brought a smile on my face :) #Wonderwall
shareAspect ratio is a wholly arbitrary choice when you think about it, our physiology doesn't lend itself more naturally to a 1.77:1 than it does a 1:1.77. That being said, a 1:1 seems kind of gimmicky, I'm looking forward to seeing this film but I have a feeling I'll find the AR annoying.
But no matter how arbitrary it is, it's like music; a discordant song will sound bad to us because we're not used to hearing it, even though Western music is based on a completely arbitrary structure as well. Out-of-tune sounds bad because our ears have been trained thus.
The scene with the skateboard was amazing. When he kind of opens the screen, makes it wider...i loved it. The ratio didn't bother me. I care more for the story than the screen s ratio. Xavier Dolan made a great movie.
