"Why change math? Math is math!"

Is Bob and Dash referring to that Common Core crap that you Americans MUST do but NO-ONE else in the world has to? Sucks to be your country at the moment.

reply

Not sure I think it was just a joke/reference to a middle aged parent trying to help with his son's homework but unable to because he never learned it when he was in school.

Similar to how most parents couldn't help high school kids with algebra or geometry for a while. Why are letters in math now? If I'm not mistaken Algebra 1 used to be optional in high school similar to how Calculus was when I went.

reply

Algebra is optional in high school?
Dude you americans.

reply

Not anymore but it used to be 40 years ago or so. Not that it needs to be mandatory there are very few occupations that require Algebra skills. Today a person could learn it in a week using youtube anyway. However, this is all a debate for why the world works the way does specifically all the problems with our education system for another time.

reply

Um, algebra is useful when learning Computer Programming, for one thing. The principles are identical, you just replace the letters with variables.

reply

Cool.

reply

No. When I was in school 40 years ago, we had to take algebra, geometry, trig and calculus.

reply

Are you sure you had to take it or is that just what your high school told you?

Many high schools push classes that are not mandatory for graduation such as advanced math and foreign langue. Shoot, I know people who took basic math, business math, and home economics for their required 3 math credits. I'm pretty sure you could even get math credit for FFA.

On the other hand I know college students that can't do standard math and have trouble reading... How did they grad from high school if Algebra and Geometry are officially required. I guess at the end of the day it depends on the high school you go to. That's why we have state mandated grad tests and ACT/SAT scores because high schools vary wildly on standards.

My daughter was taking algebra in the 7th grade and she just had an entire year of it for her 9th grade year. Quit acting like you are some expert on the United States. Obviously you aren't. You're prideful and elitist but you are certainly no expert.

The film is set in the 60s. It's a reference to New Math:

I see. So it's not the first time such absurdities have happened.

Then again, there's nothing wrong with studying number bases other than 10. There's 2 (Binary) and 16 (Hexadecimal), and even 8 (Octal) was used, too.

As Tom Lehrer said, the purpose of new math was to understand what you were doing, rather than to get the right answer.

It's issues were that in the name of simplicity it made doing math far more difficult. I was a kid during the height of this. My mother came in one night while I was doing my long division homework. She watched me for a moment and asked why I was filling half the sheet of paper. I showed her the book. She snorted and taught me division as it had been practiced for decades. It was shorter and faster.

Luckily, I was in a Catholic school, that while was using a new math text, was more concerned that I (and my peers) finished the class being able to do math. I never used the new math principles again of standard math. I'd sit through class and then ask my mom or dad to show me the old way. Worked much better.

Different bases were something not taught earlier, and that was useful. And for our typical Americans are stupid foreign friends, my school started us on Algebra in 8th grade. We were into pre-calculus by the time I was a Senior in High School.

What you just posted Costumer reminds me part of why I was pulled out of public school and homeschooled by my parents in 5th grade. My teacher assigned every subject as homework without going over it in class. I started on it at 3:30pm when I got home, worked on it til midnight and didn't get it all done.

One subject that took a really long time was math. Where I always had 65 math problems all involving multiplying and dividing numbers in the millions by hand which took freaking forever! Whoever wrote that mathbook was a sadist!

After 2 months of that my parents pulled me out and homeschooled me. Also from parents I know my age math is explained to kids in a really nonsensical way. Instead of just remembering 4X4=16 they instead have them add up a bunch of random numbers to explain how that works. It's dumb.

I work on my kids with math. My daughter is taking geometry this fall so I'm working on that with her now (last year it was algebra). The only thing I remember they taught them differently at school from what I learned was long division. The answer of course is the same but they organized it a little differently.

I help my daughter with homework. When I show her how I would do it versus the Common Core "New Math" she's always asking "Why don't they teach us that way?"

Yes. It is indeed a reference to common core, and I have said the very same thing Bob says.
