So far I've only seen the first episode (pilot). But it looks to me like Public Morals is the "cops version" of the Serpico story. If you're familiar with NYC of the mid to late 1960's then I don't have to explain. But Serpico was a New York cop (probably the only one) who wasn't crooked and wasn't on the take. He actually ratted out the other cops who all took bribes and it was a huge story at the time. His life was threatened, he got beat up, he had to turn state's witness etc. So it appears to me like this story is setting up the cops' side showing why they were on the take, they weren't such bad guys, etc. I'm probably going to watch the movie Serpico (with Al Pacino) just to remind myself of the details. Does anybody else see it the same way?

Ed has mentioned that was an influence on the show as Ed's father in real life was a NY cop and was there as their press person when a lot of the dirty cops got busted in the late 60s and early 70s. Ed's talked about it more in his memoir and interviews he's done with the show. But originally "Public Morals" was 6 different film scripts Ed's tried to get made over 20 years with one about the dirty cop scandal, one about Irish cops in general, one a biopic of Irish gangster Jack "Legs" Diamond, and a couple others he had about fictional Irish gangsters.
