I DON'T SEE THE ENTERTAINMENT VALUE IN THE FIRST EPISODE

The first episode was a lot about Muldoon's family. I didn't find it very entertaining. I watch television for entertainment purposes i.e. laugh, mystery, a good story, not for a lot of foul language and corrupt cops. I was very disappointed in what I viewed tonight. I doubt I will watch again if this is the type of show to be expected weekly. Are there any redeeming characters/qualities? The senior partner will probably ruin the young guy who seems like the only honest one there.

The 1st episode was not "compelling". I don't know if I will give this one a second viewing or not.

I watched half of it and then went to bed. The only reason I would have for watching it would be Robert Knepper, and I'd watch him in anything. He was the only reason I watched Cult. Well, I did like that show too. . .

First shows usually try to establish relationships between characters so you know the lay of the land. They also introduce what is coming. It will partially be the power struggle since "Uncle John" who controls a large section of what happens is murdered.

They have already indicated "times are changing." As for the young cop becoming corrupted. Usually when a character like that is introduced he turns out to be undercover or an instrument of change and throws a monkey wrench into everything.

I remember a good movie that could have been even better. It was "Buffalo Soldiers' set in Germany during the Vietnam War. It concerned corruption and the drug trade involving soldiers. A new soldier was sent in undercover in that situation also. However, this movie came out right after 9-11 and the studio chopped a lot of things out in reaction to terrorism. What wa sleft was still good though. It had a great cast.

I watched the first four episodes in a block and afterwards bought the season off Amazon. It's a really cool show. It reminds me of Crime Story with Dan Farina from the 80s. I was hooked.

It's story driven and the characters have depth. The original episode was the catalyst for so much. I love that the protagonists are not just plain good guys. They have flaws. They bribe. They do bad things, but sometimes for good reasons.

The bad guys aren't all bad. Most don't want a war with each other but of course they're breaking the law. It's about the intentions and motivations of characters who are all interlocked in this toxic relationship that is bound to blow up. (Spoiler) The death of Mr. O is the explosion.

I'll be honest. I started watching because of Kevin Corrigan *(Smitty). One could watch him watch paint dry and it would be captivating as hell. He's living art. I kept watching intently because the show is great. The cast is amazing. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Brian Dennehy is a national treasure. I'd love a monument built for him. Michael Rapaport and Edward Burns are electric in the show. I can't wait for the next 4 episodes.

granted, i've only seen the first episode, but do go watch the shield, or even better, the wire, for that kind of (guilty) pleasure - that's some serious stuff, without the diluted apologetics of:

"... but sometimes for good reasons"

I like the apologetics because it shows the struggle of humanity. I thinks it's much easier to have a decisive line of good and bad rather than to explain in a realistic manner the gray area that is life.

You nailed it. As a retired cop, I find the acting, characters, and story lines to be real life, at least real life in the 60's. I too hope the show is renewed.

It was Dennis Farina in the great "Crime Story," BTW.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.
