Four episodes in, and so far so good

I've been a fan of Edward Burns ever since I saw his performance in "Saving Private Ryan", and while his indie films are sometimes mediocre, or just bad, he always bounces back with something that's at least interesting, and his dedication to indie film and small budgets are always something I've admired about him.

Now here's this tv series about cops in the 1960s, and I feel like this was the series he was born to do. Playing a morally ambiguous cop who's also a strict family man is one of those perfect roles for Burns to play, and he's also surrounded himself with good characters. My favourites by far are Brian Dennehy as the old boss Mr. Patton and Neal McDonough as his son, Rusty. Granted, some characters are a bit bland and just disappear off the radar, but that's something that even the first season of "The Wire" was guilty of, so I don't condemn the show too highly for that.

Admittedly it's still a bit early to tell how the show will fare, but as I said, so far so good.

I don't know - it just feels SO clichéd to me. Every character seems to be out of a comic book about dirty cops and the criminals one loves to hate. It's almost if every scene to me feels like a computer scripted it based on other shows. Like scenes of Father to son "you're a idiot and fool!! And I have to clean up your mess!!" Or wife to husband: "can't we just leave town and put all this behind us??" Or dirty cop to criminal: "no one makes money unless I say they do!!" I could go on and on.

I love the show and I agree with you that he's doing such a great job with this. You can tell how long he's tried to make this and how much of a passion project and life-long dream this was for him to finally make.
