When you don't have other writers to work with and your producer is primarily a film producer with no sense of long form storytelling. Also how did Spielberg not tell Burns to change the ending.

To be fair, Patton finally taking action and killing his own brother was a big move, and so was Patton's death for that matter. Also Bull finally deciding enough was enough with Stacey was at least some kind of conclusion to their story, as is Terry's decision to move out of Hell's Kitchen after all.

It's just the rest of it that needs more closure.

I think what needed to happen was at best restructuring the last 2 acts end the Bull and Stacey stuff in the middle of act 3 and then have Patton getting killed and then Terry at home as the final scene.

I agree if it was edited that way it would've worked better. Ed's hadn't written a TV series till now so that's probably why.
