It makes me sad that Aaron gave up on The Boondocks in favor of this.

Out of respect I don't like depictions of any religious figures being mocked in such a horrid manner. Jesus as a drug dealer, and hanging out in the hood? You're just asking for trouble. It just seems so wrong, disrespectful, and tasteless all at the same time. I'll be very surprised if Black Jesus gets renewed for a 2nd season.

At least with the Boondocks it was a mixture of comedy, philosophical, political, and parodies of famous situations. I felt like the last season got shat on, and honestly wish Aaron would throw away this garbage "Black Jesus", and return back to The Boondocks.

I think it has so much potential, if balanced properly, to show Jesus in this light and still be tasteful and respectful.

Remember when The Last Temptation of Christ came out? Movie theatres were receiving bomb threats from Christians who hadn't seen the film, but were outraged regardless. The problem is that the man who directed the adaptation was a devout Catholic who consulted priests before making the film, and the thoughts in the film (showing Jesus hanging around brothels, fantasising about sex with Mary Magdalene) were there to strengthen the narrative in the Bible, just handled differently.

I will come to Aaron's defence on this one until I'm 100% sure this show can't be salvaged. However, as I said, there's so much that can be said if done properly... not just about Jesus as a person, but as society as a whole and how an out-of-his-element Jesus would be too much for current society to handle.

Look, two things flaming at the same time.

Well he was Jesuit schooled, so he probably knows Christianity better than most of the people who complain that the show is anti-religious.

And this isn't that bad a modern depiction of Jesus. Keep in mind that the OG did party, drink, lived around poverty, was friends with hookers, etc. And Jesus in the show is all about trying to help those around him and spread love.

And he's not a drug dealer on the show, he was just asked to oversee a deal and make sure nothing bad happened. Watching out over his people because they're obviously going to do something stupid.

At any rate it's a better depiction of Christ's message than a Mel Gibson snuff film.

I dunno. This show and McGruder seem pretty anti-religious to me. It's pretty hard to say otherwise when Jesus is made into a goofball for yucks. Just like that movie "God is not dead" where the atheist is made into a fire-breathing buffoon.

How so?

Looks like satire to me.

"Anti-religious" does not imply a lack of religious knowledge. It simply implies a lack of affinity for religion.

you can be anti-religion and still believe in God and jesus.

I don't care if it's Jesus, Ghandi, Mohammad, rather watch Boondocks.

Not only am I sad about that, I'm even more sad that Mike Clattenburg gave up on Trailer Park Boys in favor of this.

He didnt give up on boondocks, he was pushed out against his will. John Witherspoon talks about it in this interview around the 14 min mark.
