A normal person would assume they would start by studying Ellie's condition and running tests on her. Sampling her blood and DNA in order to find out what makes her immune and if it can be replicated.
But the fireflies are morons who skips straight to removing Ellie's brain.
What is even stupider in the show is that Marlene knows exactly what caused Ellie's immunity while in the game it is a mystery.

This reminded me of Eragon, if you ever read the book, you'll know the mad king is a very ominous character, he's not described, you just get the impression this is a very evil entity. In the film one of first things they do is show the damn king
